A large police operation is underway in Western Sydney after a man was shot dead in broad daylight at Blacktown.
The victim, believed to be in his early 20s, was gunned down near a police station on Carinya Street just after midday.
Blacktown shooting leaves young man dead
NSW Police say officers and paramedics arrived within minutes after reports of shots fired on the residential street.
They found the man with gunshot wounds to his neck, chest and leg.
Despite efforts by NSW Ambulance paramedics, he died at the scene.
Police pursuit and two arrests after shooting
Soon after the shooting, officers spotted a black Mazda ute allegedly leaving the area.
When the vehicle failed to stop, police began a short pursuit that lasted about five minutes.
The ute crashed on nearby Kildare Road and two men, one in his late teens and another in his early 20s, were arrested after attempting to flee on foot.
Crime scene and large police presence in Blacktown
A major crime scene has been established around Carinya Street and adjoining roads.
Multiple police units, including the dog squad and detectives, have cordoned off sections of the area while forensic teams examine several locations linked to the incident.
Superintendent Brendan Gorman said officers were already nearby and heard the gunshots, allowing them to respond “in seconds”.
He described the investigation as complex, with several crime scenes and multiple vehicles being examined, including a flipped car that police say is a secondary vehicle not involved in the pursuit.
Victim and suspects known to police
Police have confirmed the victim and the two arrested men are known to authorities.
Detectives, assisted by the homicide squad, are still working to determine a clear motive.
It is too early to say whether the attack is gang-related, but investigators are exploring all lines of inquiry.
Community urged to avoid area, no wider threat
Officers have urged drivers and residents to avoid Blacktown CBD while the large emergency operation continues.
However, police say there is no ongoing threat to the wider public and they are not searching for additional suspects at this stage.
Authorities are asking anyone with information, dash-cam video or CCTV from around Carinya Street and Kildare Road to contact Crime Stoppers.
As the investigation continues, the fatal daylight shooting has renewed concern about public-place gun violence in Sydney’s west.
