Crash at Walcha showground during motorcycle rally
A community demolition derby at the Walcha Motorcycle Rally has ended in horror after a speedway car ploughed into spectators at the town showground in northern New South Wales.
Police say the vehicle was competing in a race about 6:15pm on Saturday when it smashed through a fence and into a mobile grandstand packed with fans.
The rally, held annually at Walcha showground on Derby Street, usually combines demolition derbies with motorcycle processions, barrel racing and family attractions. However, this year’s event has now become the focus of a major crash investigation.

Injuries at Walcha crash include one critical victim
NSW Police and ambulance services confirmed that nine people were injured, including seven men and two women aged between 20 and 75.
A 54-year-old man suffered critical spinal and hip injuries, while three other spectators received serious trauma. All four were airlifted or transferred to major hospitals, including John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, by rescue helicopters.
The remaining five spectators were transported to Walcha District Hospital for treatment of less severe injuries, with several later described as serious but stable. Emergency services said at least two patients initially fought for life.
Speedway driver involved in on-track collision
Investigators have been told the 27-year-old driver lost control of his speedway car immediately after an on-track collision with another vehicle in the demolition derby.
The impact pushed the car off the track, through the safety fence and into the temporary grandstand, where spectators had little time to react. Video shared on social media shows the vehicle hurtling across the grass before striking the crowd, as bystanders scream and rush to help.
Police from the Oxley Police District have seized both the crash vehicle and the car it struck and will conduct mechanical examinations. Specialists from the Crash Investigation Unit are documenting the scene and appealing for witness footage or phone video.
Community response and ‘freak accident’ shock
Local residents and off-duty nurses were among the first to reach the injured, providing first aid before paramedics arrived. Federal MP Barnaby Joyce and regional representatives later thanked those who “dropped everything” to help in difficult weather conditions.
Walcha Council mayor Eric Noakes described the incident as a “freak accident” that has left the small community shaken. Visiting the showground afterwards, he said the atmosphere was “pretty solemn” and stressed that nobody anticipated such a catastrophe at a local rally.
Event safety and future of Walcha Motorcycle Rally
The Walcha Motorcycle Rally has run for about five years and is a key tourism and fundraising event for the town. It features street parades, stunt shows and the demolition derby that draws large crowds to the showground.
However, in the wake of the crash, Noakes confirmed that the council will review its support and conduct a risk analysis of the event’s motorsport activities. He emphasised that only experts can decide what changes are required but said the community will “certainly reassess our position.”
Meanwhile, NSW Police continue to investigate whether track conditions, safety barriers or driver error played any role in the crash. As a result, questions about how regional motorsport events manage risk and protect spectators are likely to intensify in coming weeks, even as Walcha focuses on the recovery of those injured.
